The eligibility screener

Answer simple questions about a candidate and get an eligible / not eligible answer.

Every protocol lists inclusion and exclusion criteria — the rules that decide who may join the study. The eligibility screener turns those rules into a simple question-and-answer form. You answer Yes or No about one candidate, and the screener tells you whether they meet the written criteria.

Note: The screener is a helper, not a medical decision. It only checks the answers you give against the protocol text. Eligibility for a real trial is always decided by the investigator, using the participant's full clinical picture. Treat the screener's result as a well-organized worksheet, never as the final word.

Where the questions come from#

The screener is generated automatically from the Eligibility Criteria section of your protocol — the structured section where each criterion is entered as its own item. Nothing is written twice: change the criteria in the protocol, and the screener changes with them.

Troubleshooting: If the page shows "Could not load eligibility form", the protocol's Eligibility Criteria section has no structured data saved yet. Open the protocol editor, fill in the criteria as individual items (not one block of pasted text), save, and come back.

Opening the screener#

1. Open your protocol in the editor and click the Documents button at the top-right.
2. On the Document Generation page, click the card named Eligibility Screener.
3. What you'll see: a page headed Eligibility Screener, with the protocol title and version under it, a progress bar counting criteria answered, and — the first time — a blue How to use: box that explains the flow.

Working through the stages#

The questions are grouped into stages, shown as large cards down the page — for example, basic demographics first, then medical history, then laboratory values. Only one stage is open at a time; later stages show a padlock and the word Locked until you reach them. Each stage header reads Stage X of Y and counts your progress, such as "3 / 5 answered". A stage containing make-or-break criteria carries a red Critical stage tag.

Inside a stage, each criterion is one card:

• A blue Inclusion or orange Exclusion chip shows the type, with the criterion's category beside it.
• Criteria marked Critical in red end screening on their own if failed.
• The question is written in plain language. If you want the protocol's exact wording, click Protocol criterion text underneath to unfold it.
• Two large buttons give the possible answers — click the one that is true for this candidate.

What you'll see after answering: the card turns green when the answer satisfies the criterion, or red when it does not. For an inclusion criterion, "yes, this applies" is a pass; for an exclusion criterion, "no, this does not apply" is a pass — the screener handles that logic for you, so just answer truthfully.

Follow-up questions#

Some answers open one or two extra boxes below the question — a date, a number, or a short detail. These record supporting facts (for example, the actual lab value) so your printed record is complete. Fill them in as they appear.

Moving on#

When every question in the stage is answered, the blue button at the bottom-right becomes active: Next stage — or, on the last stage, View result. Click it to continue.

The live verdict#

You never have to wait for the end to know where things stand:

• The progress bar at the top shows a running count and a status: In progress in blue, All criteria met in green, or a red count of criteria failed.
• If a Critical criterion fails, a red banner appears at the bottom of the screen: Critical criterion failed — patient is ineligible, with a View result button. You may still finish the remaining questions — an amber note explains that you "can continue documenting findings below for your records."

The result page#

After the last stage (or after clicking View result early), the result panel appears:

• A large green ELIGIBLE — the candidate meets every criterion as answered.
• Or a large red NOT ELIGIBLE — with a list under Failed criteria: quoting each failed criterion's protocol text, and below it the full list of criteria met.

Two buttons finish the job:

1. Print / export — opens your browser's print window, so you can print the answered screener or save it as a PDF for the candidate's file.
2. Screen another patient — clears every answer and returns to Stage 1 for the next candidate.

Note: The screener does not store the candidate's answers in Trelice, and it never asks for a name. If you need a record, use Print / export before clicking Screen another patient — once cleared, the answers are gone.
